Résumé

While it is now more palatable to justify wars in terms of struggles for freedom and the defense of the vulnerable, rather than adventures to win glory and fame, a careful look at the evidence from Classical Greece suggests that those Greeks who prioritized glory fought fewer and less destructive wars than those who claimed to fight for freedom.
